Churchill, Edward D. 1991, xv + 213pp., illus.

Edited and annotated by J. Gordon Scannell. Foreword by Saul Benison

This personal account of Edward D. Churchill’s Moseley Travelling Fellowship for the academic year 1926–1927, taken from interviews recorded by Saul Benison, provides a unique view of the state of thoracic surgery in the institutions he visited and the conditions in Germany between the two World Wars. These included Blair Bell in Liverpool; Berlin and Prague; Sauerbruch in Munich; deQuervain, Kocher’s successor, in Bern; Enderlen in Heidelberg; Krogh in Copenhagen; and Brauer in Hamburg. The reader will find that virtually all of the important events of Churchill’s extraordinary career (he was from 1931-1961 Professor of Surgery at the Harvard Medical School and eventually Chief of both Surgical Services at the Massachusetts General Hospital) are foreshadowed in his account of his year abroad, dictated thirty years after the event.
